How to Tell If a Sofa Is Well Built: Frame, Joints, Cushions

Short answer: Four checks, five minutes, no tools. Lift one front corner a foot off the floor and see whether the other front leg comes up with it, because if the frame twists it is not kiln-dried hardwood with real joinery. Take the seat cushion off and press the deck to feel for individual springs. Unzip a back cushion. Ask for the foam density, and look for 1.8 pounds per cubic foot or better. A sofa that passes all four will outlive two that do not, and it is usually obvious within a minute of putting your hands on it.

The frame: what is under the fabric

You want kiln-dried hardwood such as poplar, maple or alder, or engineered hardwood built from at least seven pressed layers of solid wood. What you do not want is MDF or particle board, which do not hold a staple and let go at the joint. The joints themselves matter as much as the wood: mortise and tenon or double dowel, with corner blocks and glue. A frame held together mainly by screws, staples or metal brackets through two pieces of wood is the one that wobbles in year three.

The lift test is the whole frame inspection in one move. Pick up one front corner about twelve inches. On a good frame the opposite front leg lifts off the floor with it, because the frame is rigid. On a weak one the frame racks and the other leg stays down.

The suspension: feel the deck

Pull off a seat cushion and press down across the deck with your palm. Here is what you are feeling for.

System What you feel Verdict
Eight-way hand-tied coils Distinct separate springs through the deck fabric Best, and the most expensive. Twine ties each coil in eight places so nothing shifts or squeaks.
Sinuous (no-sag) springs Firm, continuous S-wires running front to back Good value. Want 8-gauge wire or heavier with at least two tie wires across, clipped to every spring.
Drop-in coil units Springs that feel connected as one unit Acceptable. Sags earlier and can squeak where metal meets metal.
Pocket coils Soft, mattress-like Jury is still out. Comfortable now, less track record.
Webbing or grid Fabric straps or a wire grid, no springs Avoid on seats. Fine for a back only.

One warning worth knowing: some makers run twine across a drop-in coil unit and call it hand-tied. That is why you feel for separate springs instead of reading the tag.

The cushions: unzip one

Seat cushions should be a foam core at least four inches thick, wrapped in polyester fiber or down. All-foam with nothing wrapped around it goes hard and square. All-down goes flat and needs fluffing every day. For the foam itself, ask for density, not firmness. High-density foam at 1.8 pounds per cubic foot or better holds its shape; anything under about 1.5 is the cushion you will be flipping by year two.

Back cushions should have no foam at all, just polyester, down or a blend, held in sewn channels so the fill cannot migrate to the bottom corners. Unzip one in the store. If the fill is loose in a single bag, the back will slump into a lump within a year.

Three things that do not mean quality

  • Weight. A heavy sofa can be heavy because of cheap engineered board.
  • Thick arms. Padding over a hollow arm frame feels substantial and is not.
  • A big brand name on the tag. Every brand builds across several price tiers. Judge the piece in front of you.

One thing that does mean something: a lifetime frame warranty. A manufacturer willing to stand behind the frame forever usually built one worth standing behind.

What we have right now

Every piece in our Charlotte warehouse is a single item, overstock and closeouts from brands like Thomasville, Gilman Creek, Abbyson and Simon Li, most of it out of Costco. Which means you can do all four checks yourself, on the actual piece you are buying, before you pay anything.

Ask us to tip a piece up so you can look underneath. We will. If the underside is the part a store does not want you to see, that tells you what you need to know about the store.

Common questions

Can I tell anything from the price alone?

Only roughly. Price tracks build quality at full retail, but liquidation breaks that link on purpose, which is the point. A well-built closeout sofa and a poorly built one can sit next to each other at the same number, so you check the piece.

Is a reclining sofa built worse?

Different, not worse. The frame carries a steel mechanism, so the frame is usually stronger, while the mechanism and the motor become the parts that fail. Cycle every seat in the store, all the way out and back.

How long should a well-built sofa last?

Seven to fifteen years of daily use, and the fabric almost always gives up before the frame. That is why a strong frame with a plain fabric is a better buy than the other way around.

What if the cushions are not removable?

Then you cannot inspect the deck or the fill, and you are trusting the brand. Tight-back sofas are a legitimate style, but you lose your best two checks, so lean harder on the lift test and the warranty.
