Sleeper Sofas: Types of Sofa Beds and Which Is Worth It

Short answer: If guests come a few times a year, a queen pull-out with a memory foam or air-over-coil mattress is worth the money. If someone sleeps on it every night, do not buy a sleeper at all, buy a real bed. And if it is for a teenager, a dorm, or a room that doubles as an office, a convertible or futon-style sofa bed does the job for a fraction of the price. The mattress inside matters far more than the sofa around it.

The types, and what each one really is

Type How it works Best for Watch out for
Pull-out (classic sleeper) Metal frame folds out from under the seat, mattress folds in thirds Guest rooms, living rooms, real overnight guests Heavy. Thin mattress means you feel the bar.
Convertible / click-clack Back drops flat, seat becomes the bed. No separate mattress Small rooms, offices, teens, budgets Flat and firm. Seams run across where you sleep.
Futon Wood or metal frame with one thick pad First apartments, dorms, occasional crashers Pad compresses over a year or two and has to be replaced.
Tri-fold / daybed sleeper Mattress folds forward out of the seat, no metal mechanism Tight rooms, kids, easy nightly setup Usually twin or full only.
Chaise sleeper / storage sectional Chaise lifts for storage, back or seat pulls into a bed Studios, apartments where the sofa has to do two jobs Bed is often smaller than it looks. Measure it.

The mattress inside decides whether you like it

Sleeper mattresses are thin by design, because they have to fold into the seat. Here is what the thicknesses actually run:

Mattress Typical thickness The honest verdict
Innerspring / coil 4 to 5 in Cheapest and most common. Thin padding, so you feel the frame. Fine for a night or two.
Memory foam 4.5 to 6 in The best all-round upgrade. Kills the bar feeling. Sleeps warmer.
Latex 4.5 to 6 in Firm, durable, breathable. Hardest to find and priciest.
Hybrid 5 to 6 in Coils plus foam. Good, but check it still folds shut.
Air over coil Thickest when inflated Most comfortable night. Valves and bladders fail, and setup takes time.

One detail that costs people money: an extra half-inch of thickness can stop a sleeper from latching closed. If you are replacing the mattress in a sleeper you already own, measure the old one and stay within about a half inch of it.

So which is worth it?

Worth the money: a queen pull-out with a memory foam mattress, if you have real guests and real floor space. Also worth it, in a small place, is a storage chaise sleeper, because you get seating, a bed and somewhere to put the bedding.

Not worth the money: paying a premium for a coil pull-out. You are paying for the mechanism and getting a mattress your guest will mention. Either spend on the foam upgrade or buy the cheap convertible and be honest with yourself about how often it gets used.

Before you buy, measure the floor in front of the sofa. A queen sleeper needs roughly 40 inches of clear space to open, and you still need to be able to walk around it once the bed is out.

Common questions

Can someone sleep on a sleeper sofa every night?

It will hold up, but nobody should. Sleeper mattresses are 4 to 6 inches thick and sit on a metal deck. For nightly sleep, a real mattress on a frame costs less and sleeps better.

What sizes do sleeper sofas come in?

Twin, full and queen are standard. Kings are rare. The bed size does not always match the sofa size, so check the open dimensions, not the sofa width.

Can I replace just the mattress?

Yes, and it is the single best upgrade you can make to a sleeper you already like. Match the size and stay within about a half inch of the original thickness so it still folds shut.

Do sleeper sofas fit up narrow stairs?

They are heavier and less forgiving than regular sofas because of the steel frame inside, and you cannot remove the back on most of them. Measure your doorway and stairwell before you commit.
