How Long Should a Mattress Last and When to Replace It

Short answer: Plan on 7 to 10 years, but the type matters more than most people think. Innerspring averages about 5.5 to 6.5 years, memory foam 6 to 7, hybrid 6.5 to 7.5, and latex 7.5 to 8.5. The calendar is not the real test, though. If you wake up sore and you sleep better in a hotel bed than your own, it is done, whether it is four years old or twelve. A mattress does not expire on a date. It wears out under one specific body.

Average lifespan by type

These are the durability ranges the Sleep Foundation publishes, and they line up with what we see coming through the warehouse on trade-ins and returns.

Type Typical lifespan How it usually fails Worth replacing early?
Innerspring 5.5 to 6.5 years Coils lose tension, you feel a dip and sometimes hear it Yes. This is the shortest-lived build.
Memory foam 6 to 7 years Body impressions that stop bouncing back Depends on foam density. Cheap foam goes fast.
Hybrid 6.5 to 7.5 years Comfort layer softens before the coils give out Often the best value per year.
Latex 7.5 to 8.5 years Slow, even softening rather than a dip Longest lasting, costs the most up front.

The signs it is actually time

Forget the age for a minute and check these instead. Any two of them together and you are overdue.

  • You sleep better somewhere else. A hotel, a guest room, your in-laws’ couch. This is the single clearest signal, and it is the one people ignore longest.
  • Visible sag or a body impression that is still there after you get up and stays there.
  • You wake up stiff or sore and it loosens up within an hour of being on your feet. That is the bed, not your back.
  • You feel your partner move more than you used to. Worn coils stop isolating motion.
  • Allergies or asthma got worse at night. Old mattresses accumulate dust mites and dander no matter how clean you are.

What kills a mattress early

Material quality is the big one. High-density foam and latex outlast low-density foam by years, and the price usually tells you which you bought. After that it is weight and sleeping position, side sleepers concentrate load on the hip and shoulder, so sag shows up there first. The rest is maintenance you control: use a protector, rotate it head to foot every few months, and put it on the right base. Foam and hybrid mattresses on a worn box spring or on slats spaced too far apart sag early, and the manufacturer will blame the base, not the mattress.

The warranty is not the lifespan

This trips up a lot of people. A 10-year warranty is not a promise the mattress will feel good for 10 years. It covers manufacturing defects and sagging past a stated depth, measured with no weight on the bed, and it almost always requires that you used an approved foundation. A mattress that has simply gotten soft and tired is not a defect, and no warranty on earth covers it. So buy for how long you expect to actually like it, not for the number of years printed on the tag.

What we have right now

We stock mattresses as single pieces on the floor in Charlotte, so you can lie on the exact one you are taking home.

If you are replacing a mattress and not a whole bed, bring the measurement of your current one. Sizes are standard but bed frames are not.

Common questions

Can I just flip it instead of replacing it?

Only if it is a true two-sided mattress, and almost nothing sold in the last fifteen years is. Modern mattresses are built one-sided with the comfort layers on top. Flipping one puts the support core against your body. Rotate it head to foot instead, which does help even out wear.

Does a mattress topper fix a worn-out bed?

It masks a soft spot, it does not fix a sag. If the support layer underneath has given out, a topper just adds cushion on top of a dip and you still sink into it. A topper is a reasonable fix for a mattress that is too firm, and a waste of money on one that is collapsing.

My mattress is 12 years old but feels fine. Do I have to replace it?

No. If you sleep well on it and there is no sag, keep it. We would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need. Just be honest with yourself about the hotel test.

Is an expensive mattress going to last longer?

Usually, but the gap is smaller than the price gap. Going from a cheap bed to a mid-priced one buys you real years. Going from mid to luxury mostly buys you feel, not durability.
