Short answer: A queen is 60 by 80 inches and it is the right answer for most couples and most bedrooms. Twin is 38 by 75, twin XL is 38 by 80, full is 54 by 75, king is 76 by 80, and California king is 72 by 84. The two that confuse people most: a full is not a “double bed for two adults,” it gives each person less width than a twin, and a California king is narrower than a regular king, just longer.
The size chart
These are the standard US dimensions. Every mattress we sell matches them, which is why sheets and frames interchange. The room size column is the minimum we would want to see before recommending that size, leaving walking room on at least one side.
| Size | Dimensions | Width per person (2 people) | Minimum room | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38″ x 75″ | n/a | 7′ x 10′ | Kids, bunk beds, small guest rooms |
| Twin XL | 38″ x 80″ | n/a | 7′ x 10′ | Tall teens, dorms, adjustable bases |
| Full | 54″ x 75″ | 27″ | 10′ x 10′ | One adult who sprawls, tight guest rooms |
| Queen | 60″ x 80″ | 30″ | 10′ x 10′ | Most couples, most bedrooms |
| King | 76″ x 80″ | 38″ | 10′ x 12′ | Couples who want real space, kids who pile in |
| California king | 72″ x 84″ | 36″ | 12′ x 12′ | Anyone over about 6’2″ |
The three things people get wrong
A full is not a small queen. At 54 inches wide, two adults get 27 inches each. A standard twin is 38 inches. So two people in a full each have less room than a child in a twin. A full is a great bed for one person and a compromise for two.
California king is not bigger than king. It trades 4 inches of width for 4 inches of length. The only reason to buy one is height. If nobody in the bed is over about 6’2″, a standard king is the better buy, and sheets and frames are far easier to find.
Twin XL and queen are the same length. Both are 80 inches. That is why two twin XL mattresses side by side equal a king, 76 inches wide, which is how split king adjustable bases work.
Measure the room, not just the bed
Take the mattress dimensions, then add the frame. A bed frame or platform usually adds 2 to 5 inches on each side, and a headboard adds a couple of inches of depth. After that, leave at least 24 inches of walking room on any side you need to walk down, and more if a closet or a door swings into that space. A king technically fits in a 10 by 10 room, but you will be shuffling sideways past the footboard every day. That is the kind of thing nobody notices in the store and everybody notices at home.
Upgrading sizes: what else has to change
| Moving from | New frame? | New sheets? | Fits up stairs? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full to queen | Yes | Yes | Usually fine |
| Queen to king | Yes, plus wider base | Yes | Check doorways, a king is 76″ wide |
| Twin to twin XL | Sometimes, 5″ longer | Yes, twin sheets will not stretch | Easy |
| King to California king | Yes, different frame | Yes, not interchangeable | Longer, so tighter on turns |

Common questions
Will queen sheets fit a full?
No. A queen is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer. Deep-pocket queen sheets on a full will bunch and pull loose every night. Buy the size you own.
Is there a size between queen and king?
Not a standard one. Olympic or expanded queen exists at 66 inches wide, but it is rare, and finding sheets and frames for it is a constant chore. If a queen feels tight and a king will not fit the room, measure again before you give up on the king, then look at a storage bed to win back the floor space.
Do mattress heights vary?
Yes, and only height varies. Width and length are standard, but thickness runs anywhere from about 8 to 16 inches. That matters for sheets, since a 14-inch mattress needs deep-pocket fitted sheets, and it matters for how high you sit when you get out of bed.
Which size do you sell the most of?
Queen, by a wide margin, and it is not close. It is the size that fits the most bedrooms in Charlotte without crowding them, and it is the easiest size to find frames, sheets and protectors for at a normal price.
