Short answer: memory foam hugs you and kills motion transfer, but sleeps warm and has weak edges. Innerspring sleeps cool, has strong edges and costs less, but you feel your partner move. A hybrid puts foam on top of pocketed coils and gets most of both — which is why it is what most people should buy.
How each one is built
Innerspring. A core of metal coils with a thin comfort layer on top, usually two inches or less. The coils do the supporting and the airflow.
Memory foam. No coils at all. A dense polyfoam base with memory foam — viscoelastic polyurethane — layered over it. It softens with your body heat, so it molds to your shape and holds it.
Hybrid. A pocketed-coil core with a real foam comfort layer on top, usually two inches or more. Each coil is wrapped separately, so it moves on its own instead of transmitting movement across the bed like an old innerspring.
Side by side
| Memory foam | Innerspring | Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | You sink in and it holds you | You lie on top of it | Contouring with push-back underneath |
| Partner movement | Best — you feel almost nothing | Worst | Good |
| Sleeping temperature | Warmest — foam traps heat | Coolest — air moves through the coils | Cooler than all-foam |
| Edge support | Weakest — the edge gives out | Strong | Strong |
| Typical lifespan | 6–7 years | 5.5–6.5 years | Comparable or better |
| Weight of the mattress | Heavy and floppy to move | Lighter | Heaviest |
Pick by what actually bothers you
Your partner wakes you up every time they turn over. Memory foam, or a hybrid with pocketed coils. A traditional innerspring is the worst possible choice here.
You sleep hot. Innerspring or hybrid. If you want foam anyway, look for gel-infused or open-cell foam, and know that it helps but does not solve it.
You sit on the edge of the bed to put your shoes on, or you share a bed and use the full width. Skip all-foam. The edge collapses and you lose four to six inches of usable mattress on each side.
You have shoulder or hip pressure as a side sleeper. Memory foam or a soft-side hybrid, in the 4 to 6 firmness range. See our firmness guide.
You weigh over 230 lbs. Coils. Foam compresses further under more weight, so a hybrid or innerspring will hold you level longer and last longer.
You want the fewest regrets for the least thought. Medium-firm hybrid. It is the answer for most people most of the time.
Three things that matter more than the category
- Foam density. Two memory foam mattresses at the same price can be five years apart in lifespan depending on the density of the foam. The category on the label tells you less than the build quality.
- Coil count and gauge on a hybrid. Pocketed coils behave completely differently from the old connected-coil innerspring your parents had.
- Firmness. The wrong firmness in the right category will still wreck your back. Get that right first.
The smell when you unbox a foam mattress
That is off-gassing from the foam. It is normal, it fades in a few days, and airing the room out speeds it up. It is not a defect and it is not a reason to return the mattress in the first week.

Common questions
Is a hybrid just a fancier innerspring?
No. The coils are individually pocketed rather than wired together, and the comfort layer on top is real foam instead of a thin pad. It feels closer to foam than to an old spring bed.
Which type lasts the longest?
Averages run 6–7 years for memory foam and 5.5–6.5 for innerspring, but build quality moves that more than the category does. A well-built hybrid outlasts a cheap foam bed easily.
Do memory foam mattresses really sleep hot?
Warmer, yes, because the foam wraps around you and traps body heat. Gel and open-cell foams reduce it. If you run hot already, coils are the safer bet.
Which is best for back pain?
There is no single answer by type. What helps is keeping the spine level, which is mostly a firmness question. Hybrids suit the widest range of people because they contour without letting the hips drop.
